The VT crew of Andrew and Justin, along with Caleb part time, broke new ground with completing this building over the summer. It presents our first forty floor free span floor system--with an ingenious system of double buttresses not only holding up the massive girders but also using that weight to pull in the upper beam against the one ton per lineal foot stresses from the roof system at 70#/SF. We are elated that we were able to come up with a basic design to handle these loads and at the same time to offer our client something he never expected--which was warehouse space with no internal posts. Speaking of posts--the traditional perimeter posts had to be re-sized form our normal 6x8 doug fir to 6x12's sistered with quadruple 2x12's of doug fir structural select...which assembled weighed about 800 pounds apiece....for some reason the crew decided to use a crane to set these....which they aptly explained to me when I asked why it was necessary....being a little slow on the uptake when we forge into new territory....:-\ This building was a real challenge for us--not only structurally but just in reaching the upper gables more than 40' above the ground....no small feat. We are grateful we had a chance to build something that stretched all of us....and now have another milestone in our repertoire.
